johnny 23 ~ full "translation"

Charles Burns' has "remixed" his excellent recent book, X'ed Out, into a new story, Johnny 23. Johnny 23 is written in a monoalphabetic cipher of English, i.e. a single "alien" character has been used to replace each letter / number in the traditional English alphabet. Since we are given a crib (in the form of the title), deciphering the text is not too difficult, although there are a large number of "typos" which can slow the process a little.

The text is surreal and filled with non sequiturs. In X'ed Out, the main character Doug performs in a Tintin mask under the name "Johnny 23." His performance involves reading abstract surrealist poetry generated using William S. Burroughs' "cut-up" technique. Visually, Johnny 23 implements this technique with images, and many segments of the text seem to be similarly generated. There are however several moments where distinct pieces of a story connected closely to the visuals emerge.

Some of the apparent "misspellings" and "errors" are surely due to whatever mash up technique was used to generate the text. Many, however, are clearly typos of the form generated by quick typing (e.g. "teh" or "adn"). In the following "translation," I have chosen to correct as many of these as possible, and to add appropriate punctuation where obvious. In some cases, however, where apparent ungrammaticalities due to cut ups allow multiple interesting interpretations of the text, I have omitted punctuation.

Reading the text of Johnny 23 is a strangely disorienting experience. Deciphering as you go along, typos take on interesting new meanings, and it is difficult to tell how much of this was intentional. Take "Dally forth . . . " on p. 32, surely a typo, yet allowing for an interesting double reading given the sexual content of previous pages . . . or p. 24, is "word" in "from a word away" a misspelling of "world," or a pun on the Burroughs theme of the word virus which pervades the book? Anyone interested in the text at that level of detail should simply decipher it themselves.

For those who are impatient, however, here is the full deciphering of Johnny 23. Text is given by page number. Each line denotes a text box or speech balloon. Ordering is the obvious left to right, top to bottom. There were only a couple characters which I was unable to decipher, which I presume to be numerals. These are indicated with a _ when they appear.

I think part of the "cut-up" technique must've been done with song lyrics, but that might just be me adding them in everywhere. I really like the mention of "Always Crashing in the Same Car." "Truth is stranger than all the lies I've told" sounds like some song lyric, although I don't know what, and is a pretty interesting line.

Thanks for publishing the translation.
I think that Charles Burns is quite meticulous and it seems very unlikely that he would include typos and errors in the laborious process of inking an entire 'alien' alphabet. I therefore conclude that there might well be information contained in the 'errors'. I will report back if I find anything.

I agree it's a possibility - on the other hand, remember that proofreading would be (near) impossible. Given the regularity in the appearance of the characters, my best guess is that he created a font, and typed the script into whatever software he used for the remix to generate the text. If he could only see the "alien" text while typing, this would make it very hard to spot any typos.

On the other hand, some of the weird spellings created a very intriguing psychological effect while reading the text in its alien code.

I strongly suggest transcribing the alphabet and reading it off the page for yourself - do please let me know if you find any hidden meanings / jokes / references I've missed!

I've transcribed the basic alphabet - it may be a fool's errand but I think I will try a few pages and see if any pattern emerges.

Thank you for this. I'm very glad to know others are working on translating and if anyone determines another cipher for some of the "typos" it would be great to know. I would add that the correction of "sac" to "sack" on page 6 obscures what may be a reference to the yolk sac (with reptilian embryo) which is a prominent visual theme in both x'ed out and johnny 23.

Thank you so much for doing this. I bought Johnny 23 when it came out but only got around to reading it last night. Yes, my backlog of reading is that bad.

It wasn't until I got to the end that I realized the writing was indeed a language rather than a visual design of random symbols. I was going to being the long work of decoding, but checked online first to see if anyone else had done it. And you had.

It's very pleasant and intriguing : time passed to translate is very fun and addictive. It is obviously more difficult for me, because i'm not an english native, but eventually i did it !
I'm very surprised to see how the tranlating process can improve the pleasure of enjoying the frames : it takes time, so during all the process the reader have take a long time to look at all the tiny details of the drawings, and discover constantly new things. Amazing book.
