One of my Astronomy professors who taught "The Search for ET life" said that the most successful organism on earth was bacteria: they were here long before us and show every sign of being here after.
In trying to figure out how DNA could have evolved ( latticed in rock? ) the possible idea that bacteria are the panspermic catalysts to large life ( that carries, propagates, and gives quarter to them ) was thoroughly discomfort-inspiring.
